SJCAM – Differentiating between an Original and Fake SJCAM
SJCAM is by far the most successful GoPro-like action camera in the market. The main reason for its success is undeniably SJCAM’s quality – Its good, and sold at a cheap price compared to the Gopro. Its success is so apparent that other companies are riding on SJCAM’s success by producing imitation copies of SJCAM cameras. This is especially confusing to buyers looking to get good quality yet cheap SJCAM cameras.
To clarify, the latest model launched by SJCAM is the SJ5000x Elite. Other ‘higher’ models such as SJ7000 and/or SJ9000 are definitely imitations. There are also imitations of the SJCAM with the same name (ie: SJ4000). All of these imitations don’t have the same quality that you get on the original SJCAM, so while you may save a few bucks, the quality is significantly less than you could otherwise get with an original SJCAM, definitely not a good deal!
So how exactly are you able to tell if you are getting the original SJCAM? Well for one, we at www.cameralah.com only stock original units, so you can be rest assured that you are getting genuine versions of the SJCAM when buying through us.
However, if you are buying it elsewhere, be sure to look out for these 2 things:
- SJCAM logo on camera
This is the biggest telltale sign. Original SJCAMs come with the SJCAM logo on the bottom right hand side of the camera (Front facing) while imitations don’t (and can’t, for copyright reasons, DUH!).
- SJCAM Authenticity Sticker – Verify your Unit on SJCAM’s website
The latests SJCAM models come with an Authenticity Sticker that you can verify online via SJCAM’s official website
- Packaging Inconsistencies
Due to a lack of Quality control, fake units have Packaging Inconsistencies, including spelling Errors on packaging (ie: Water Resistabt instead of Water Resistant)
- Software and App
Fake SJCAMs are not compatible with the SJCAM app. You also won’t be able to update/upgrade to the latest SJCAM firmware.
